The European Union and China said they made some progress after a week of technical talks in Beijing aimed at scaling back or reversing tariffs that the bloc applied to electric vehicles made in China.

China filed an appeal with the WTO over the EU's tariffs on China's EVs as bilateral talks between China and the EU stagnate.

China has moved forward with a complaint at the World Trade Organization that alleges the European Union has improperly set anti-subsidy tariffs on new Chinese-made electric vehicles.

Any agreement reached with Chinese producers on minimum prices for electric vehicles would need to be as effective and enforceable as the EU tariffs that were imposed last week, the likely future European Union trade chief said on Monday.

The extra tariffs will range from 7.8% for Tesla to 35.3% for SAIC Motor, and stack on top of the 10% standard import duty for cars to the EU.

Chinese officials said on Monday it has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization against the European Union over proposed tariffs on its electrical vehicles.

The levies range between 8% and 35% depending on the manufacturer — on top of an existing 10% tariff — and are set to remain in place for the next five years.
