Juan Soto’s first at-bat for the New York Mets gave some indication as to why they signed him to reportedly the biggest contract in American sports history. The 26-year-old stepped up to the plate on Saturday and promptly launched a 426-foot homer over the left-center-field fence during the Mets’ 6-2 win over the Houston Astros in their Spring Training game.

The $765 million outfielder, batting second in the Mets’ spring training opener, crushed a 2-1 offering from Astros lefty Colton Gordon over the left-center field wall for a solo homer on Saturday afternoon. It traveled 426 feet at 106.2 mph — an impressive shot in his debut in blue and orange.

Juan Soto understands he has a reputation. He also understands even a reputation as outsized as his needs affirmation. “Everybody knows who you are,” Soto said Saturday afternoon, after homering in his first spring plate appearance with the Mets in their 6-2 victory.
