U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican, announced he will serve as chairman for the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

In a letter to his colleagues, Paul says the committee's "mission of oversight and investigations is critical to Congress reasserting itself."
