The ship had been launched in 1943 in Portland, Maine, one of over 2,700 identical cargo vessels called Liberty ships. This one had been built in only 56 days, a small miracle, even in wartime.
It's how the United States ended up with the Statue of Liberty, after all ... in 1940 and served as the lead ship of her class until it was broken down less than a decade later, in 1948.
