The Republican-led legislature and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis agreed on a final product after a rare intra-party political battle brought out death threats.

GOP leaders grudgingly returned to Tallahassee as DeSantis held press conferences accusing them of being soft on illegal immigration. The Legislature gaveled in and out and then called its own second Special Session, passing the TRUMP Act that bestowed the power of state immigration enforcement to Simpson.

Last month, lawmakers had tossed out a set of immigration proposals backed by DeSantis, prompting the governor to blast the bill lawmakers offered in response. DeSantis had pledged to veto that measure, which he called “weak,” and threatened to back Republican primary challenges against its supporters.
