Houston Zoo returns 25 sea turtles home to Gulf after cold stuns in January and February
With temperatures warming, 24 cold-stunned green sea turtles and a loggerhead turtle have returned home to the cozy waters of the Gulf.

The sea turtles, ranging in size from 3 to 35 pounds, were released by the Zoo’s sea turtle team and TAMU Galveston’s Gulf Center for Sea Turtle Research.

So far in 2025, a total of 102 cold-stunned turtles have been rescued, and rehabilitated by Houston Zoo with ongoing efforts to rehabilitate and return them to the wild. To track their movements, three of the newly released turtles—two green sea turtles and one loggerhead—were fitted with satellite transmitters.
