Some Texas Republicans Are Backing Talarico. Here's Why
Some Texas Republicans are backing Democrat James Talarico against Republican Ken Paxton in the United States Senate race. Talarico says he hears from Republicans at nearly every campaign event who have never voted for a Democrat, including voters who previously supported Trump. His campaign released an ad featuring former Republican officeholders who cited concerns about Paxton's conduct and praised Talarico's character. A campaign memo released in September listed more than 20 Republican officials publicly supporting the Democratic nominee in the Senate contest. The endorsements have also drawn pushback. Former Texas Republican Party chairman Matt Rinaldi posted voting histories showing that endorsers Bennett Ratliff and Alan Steelman voted in the 2024 Democratic primary. Talarico says his supporters include very conservative, lifelong Republicans. Texas Politics Project's Jim Henson says even limited crossover could matter in a close race, provided Democratic turnout holds and independents remain unfavorable toward incumbent Republicans. Talarico has consistently polled better among independents than Paxton, who is struggling to maintain his expected base, Henson says.
