The terminology, in typical Germanic fashion, is a little confusing. The entire system is called "Panoramic iDrive," with “Panoramic Vision” being the funky horizontal band display across the whole dash; meanwhile, the all-new software the whole enchilada runs on is named “BMW Operating System X.”

BMW is rethinking its car infotainment experience with a bunch of new technologies working in tandem. Starting late 2025, it'll begin outfitting all of its vehicles with what it's calling the 'Panoramic iDrive' system,

Central Display: This is the screen we've all come to expect in any new car, from the Tesla Model 3 to the Hyundai Ioniq 9. BMW still uses its touchscreen menu from the current iDrive, but now, up to six different widgets can be swiped from the display onto the windshield.

The German marque has also introduced a new central touchscreen display that is angled so it faces the driver. Said to make it easier to reach and operate by those in control, the display runs BMW’s latest OS X operating system that has been developed in-house for a slicker, more intuitive user experience.

BMW is rolling out its new Panoramic iDrive system, which has been developed to help revolutionize the in-cabin experience of its vehicles.

The next generation of BMW ’s iDrive infotainment system is making its global debut this week at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas. At technology partner Amazon’s booth, visitors can get an initial impression using a beta version in an X3 crossover.

Dubbed BMW Operating System X, this new system integrates a panoramic screen projected on the windshield, with a lower media screen that can be used as a touch-based controller. The new BMW Panoramic iDrive will debut before the end of 2025 with the introduction of the Neue Klasse generation of BMWs.

Unveiled at CES 2024, the BMW Panoramic iDrive brings forward innovative design of the cabin to be used in future BMW Cars.

With its sweeping 3D graphics, the head-up display, or HUD, is Panoramic iDrive's most eye-catching component. BMW says the HUD projects navigation and dashboard information within the driver's line of sight without needing a special windshield coating—which means drivers won't have another thing to pay for when a rock inevitably cracks the glass.
