Josh Heupel took over at Tennessee ahead of the 2021 season. At the time, the Volunteers were dealing with the threat of an NCAA investigation into the end of the Jeremy Pruitt era and were coming off losing seasons in three of their last four seasons. It had also been more than a decade since the Volunteers went to a New Year’s Six game.
