ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — At least 28 bodies were pulled from the icy waters of the Potomac River after an American Airlines jet carrying 60 passengers and four crew members collided with an Army helicopter while landing at Ronald Reagan National Airport near Washington, officials said Thursday.

Areas well to the west and northwest of D.C. — including Winchester in Virginia, Martinsburg in West Virginia and Hagerstown in Maryland — are under a more severe high wind warning from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today due to the potential for damaging wind gusts near 60 mph.

Forecasts indicate that an atmospheric river will bring heavy rain and snowfall to much of the Pacific Northwest starting late this week and lasting through the weekend. With persistent heavy rainfall, flash flooding could become a concern for residents across the region.
