The Spartans started the week by defeating Rutgers 81-74 at Madison Square Garden behind Jase Richardson’s 20-point performance. Michigan State went back home to East Lansing to face Minnesota last night (which had won its last three games) and defeated the Golden Gophers 73-51.

The Big Ten released its weekly award list for Week 11 of the regular season and two teams split the awards. Minnesota’s Dawson Garcia was named Player of the Week and Maryland’s Derik Queen was named Freshman of the Week.

Sarah Te-Biasu scored 20 points, Kaylene Smikle added 17 and No. 14 Maryland held off Penn State’s second-half rally to earn an 82-73 victory. Maryland (17-4, 7-3 Big Ten Conference) entered on a three-game losing streak — all to top-15 teams.

Outside shooting was a major problem last season for Maryland. The Terrapins shot an abysmal 29% from 3-point range on their way to a losing season. Improvement in that department is one reason why Maryland is in much better shape in 2024-25.

That fight could become a constitutional clash over control of taxpayer money and expansion of executive power before the Supreme Court.
