Turner wouldn’t be the first former NFL player to lead the HUD. Jack Kemp played in the league in the 1950s and 1960s, and held the cabinet position during George H.W. Bush’s term in office.

In separate hearings on Capitol Hill this week, the Education Secretary answered questions about a range of issues, from student loans to mental health programs.

Turner has a background in politics and unsuccessfully ran for a California Senate seat in 2006. A few years later he was elected to the Texas House where he served two terms from 2013 to 2017.
