New York’s tattoo culture dates back to the 19th century. The New York Times reports that sailors introduced tattooing to the city, using hand needles to create designs while passing time at sea.

The model, 25, paid tribute to her love for New York City with a small tattoo behind her ear, which tattoo artist Doctor Woo of The Hideaway @ Suite X in Los Angeles shared Sunday to Instagram.
