The courthouse was built in 1895 and dedicated in 1897. According to the Rock Island Preservation Society, the courthouse cost about $112,000 to build. It was renovated several times over the decades.

The courthouse, 210 15th St., Rock Island, has been the subject of a tug-of-war between the county that wants it demolished and preservation groups, who sued to keep it standing in February 2019.
