Victoria Hall was a multi purpose venue based on Toward Road opposite Mowbray Park in Sunderland town centre. Built in 1872, it could host events with a capacity of up to 3000 people. However, the hall became most well known for being the scene of a tragedy that occurred on June 16th, 1883, where over 183 young children were crushed to death in a stampede to see a popular entertainer, some of them only as young as three.
