How to Build a Left Leaning BST
Annaplexis // Anna Pantelous on Instagram: "…and since I mentioned double knitting yesterday, here’s a video showing how to do it 🎥🧶 Knit a stitch on the front layer with one colour and purl a stitch on the back layer with the other. For colourwork, switch colours. Make sure the strands stay between the two layers. You can see how this technique is similar to ladderback jacquard, right? I’m using the lovely sterling silver drop ring by @roukouna.jewelry #learntoknit"

My favourite method for small circumference knitting in the round is dpns 😇, but lately I’ve been practicing the magic loop and thanks to this tip it feels faster and easier! 💡🧶👉 At needle changes, twist the right hand needle to form a loop, then put your left thumb through the loop to the left. You are now holding your project firmly with no awkward wires in your way! | Annaplexis

There are countless ways to knit a bobble, most of which follow a similar structure: begin with a double or multiple increase, knit a couple of rows over the newly created stitches and then make a double or multiple decrease to return to the initial stitch count. Here’s an example: kyok (knit, yo, knit into the same stitch), turn your work to have the wrong side facing you, p3, turn your work back again to have the right side facing you, CDD (centred double decrease). | Annaplexis

🧶 How to knit knots This is how to make a small bobble - or knot I prefer to knit backwards rather than turn my knitting for knots and bobbles, but if you prefer you can do it the traditional way: kfb, turn, p2, turn, k2tog. This is the knot used in The Knotty One of the Learn-to-knit blanket 🟦 Find the free pattern on www.annaplexis.eu or in the book Learn to Knit in 50 Squares to be released in October. You can bind off a sock or hat (or as here, a square knitted in the round) by drawing the yarn through the remaining stitches and then pulling tightly to close the hole. To do this: Cut the yarn leaving a tail of 15cm. Knit each stitch pulling the loop until the tail has passed through the stitch. Repeat to end of round. Pull the yarn to close the hole tightly and weave in all ends. #knitting | Annaplexis

Catching floats: catching the non-dominant yarn in two-handed knitting Catching the non-dominant yarn is slightly more complicated than catching the yarn to the left. Once you get it though, it’s not so hard and you can do it in one fluid movement. Find detailed explanations at: https://annaplexisinenglish.wordpress.com/catching-floats/ | Annaplexis

Regular cast off. This cast off turns out rather tight, so you may want to go up a needle size (depending on what you are making) #knitting | Annaplexis

“Make one” increases on a top down cardigan. For symmetry, turn the stitches to the left on one side and to the right on the other, called M1L 😊 make one left) and M1R (=make one right) respectively. #knitting | Annaplexis

I prefer seamless #knits, so I’ve only used mattress stitch very rarely, but it does make an invisible join and is very handy for vertical seams. The idea is to pick up two horizontal bars every time (the ones between two stitch columns) on each side, inserting the needle into the hole it emerged from just before. After a few stitches, pull the yarn to tighten the seam. That is such a satisfying moment 🤩 Magic! You get a perfect join! ✨ ✨ ✨ | Annaplexis

Jeny’s surprisingly stretchy bind off Make a yarn over and pull it over the next stitch together with the previous stitch when casting off. This will make your cast off really stretchy. Ideal for toe-up socks, top-down pullover hems and shawls, where the regular cast off usually turns out rather tight. I hadn’t realized that in fact you should make a reverse yarn over, when casting off knit stitches 🫣 (and a regular one when casting off purl stitches), which gives a really neat look! | Annaplex

If you need to undo your knitting, you can do this safely with a lifeline: Pass a circular or double-pointed needle through each stitch in a row below the point where the problem lies, and unravel down to this line. Use a thinner needle than the one you have knitted with. Pick up the right leg of every stitch. In plain stocking stitch, there is the risk of inadvertently jumping to a row above or below, so it’s better to pick up the stitches from the wrong side, using the ridges as a guide. #knit

Annaplexis // Anna Pantelous on Instagram: "How do you get a stretchy and invisible folded hem on a top down sweater? 🧶🌺☕️🫖🧶 I used to seam my folded hems with regular sewing stitches, but that tightens the hem. The 3-needle bind off isn’t ideal either, since it creates a bulky ridge 🤔 Recently, I saw this method of grafting the hem together, and I’m not going back! The result is invisible and as stretchy as the rest of your knitted fabric. A geeky note: If you work around the purl bumps, y

🧶 How to knit rope cables If you haven’t knitted cables before, it’s probably best you use a cable needle, but personally, being an experienced knitter, I prefer to live life dangerously and do it without 😎 This is how to do a left twist with 3 sts, also known as a C6F 🙌🎥🧶🔀 | Annaplexis

There are several ways of decreasing 3 stitches to 1. Shown here is the centred double decrease (CDD), where the center stitch lies on top. 🧶 You can practice it with square 11. The Convergent One of the Learn to Knit Blanket. Link to website and book in bio 🔗 | Annaplexis

🧶 Have you made a mistake a few stitches back? Here’s how to un-knit stitches. 🎥 That way you can go back, fix the error and keep knitting from there. Unknitting is called tinking (K-N-I-T => T-I-N-K 😁 Learning to fix your own mistakes is an essential step in becoming a confident knitter 💪🧶❤️ https://annaplexisinenglish.wordpress.com/2023/02/16/mistakes/ | Annaplexis

To minimise the jog when knitting stripes in the round, twist yarns anticlockwise when changing colours. The yarns will pull in opposite directions, evening out the jog. #knitting | Annaplexis

Regular cast off This is the most common cast off and the one you are most likely to learn first as a beginner. Knit 2 stitches, pass the first stitch over the second. *Knit another stitch, pass the previous stitch over this one. Repeat from * until you have 1 stitch left. Cut the yarn and pull it through stitches left. This cast off can turn out a little tight, especially if you are knitting in garter stitch e.g., so I like to use a needle that is a half or a full size larger 🧶 🧶 🧶 | Annaple

When casting off a hat (or, in this case, a knitted square worked in the round), I like to pass the yarn once more through all the stitches before pulling tight. I make a buttonhole stitch or two to fasten the yarn before weaving in the end. #knitting | Annaplexis

Agreed, those underarm gaps on raglan/yoke sweaters can be VERY frustrating 🤨 Here’s the most effective method I have found so far to eliminate them: At the point where you’re transitioning from picking up stitches to knitting the stitches on hold (or vice versa), 👉 pick up one loop inserting the right needle back to front 👉 pick up the next loop inserting the right needle front to back. Tighten the working yarn before knitting on. On the next round eliminate these stitches as follows: 👉 Kni

There are many bobble variants, which usually follow a similar structure: a double or multiple increase, knitting a couple of rows over the increased stitches and a double or multiple decrease. Here’s a big bobble, used in square 31. The Knobbly One of the Learn-to-knit blanket, where you will also learn how to close the gap usually formed next to a bobble. The last stitch usually turns out a bit loose. If you seam your knitted piece to another, that won’t be a problem. But for “free-standing” pieces there is a fix: Knit to last stitch, lift the stitch below the last stitch onto your left needle and knit the two stitches together 🧶 | Annaplexis

Raglan decreases need to be symmetrical to look nice, i.e. if you knit 2 together on one side of the marker, you should make a left-leaning decrease (SSK) on the other side. You can have one or more stitches between the decreases (or none as in the video). The decreases are shown here on Square 17.
